Aqua To Reunite (Again) For 20th Anniversary Of Their 1997 Smash “Barbie Girl”

We’ve been down this road with these crazy-fun Danish popsters before. Aqua, who released their multi-million-selling debut LP Aquarium in 1997 and follow-up Aquarius in 2000, only to disband in 2001 — then reunite seven years later for a tour, a subsequent greatest hits album and 2011 studio album — are getting the band back together again, this time for the 20th anniversary of their global smash “Barbie Girl.”

NME reports that original Aqua members Lene Nystrøm, René Dif, Søren Rasted and Claus Norreen will tour their home country of Denmark in 2017. Ironically, “Barbie Girl” won an NME Award in 1998 for Worst Single.

“Barbie Girl” topped the singles charts in a dozen countries upon its release in ’97, and peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its parent album, Aquarium, hit the same position on the Billboard 200 and has sold 3 million copies in the US, to date. The band racked up one more stateside Top 40 hit, “Lollipop (Candyman)”, and landed the song “Turn Back Time” on the Sliding Doors soundtrack before releasing their less successful sophomore LP.

Ten years after taking a break, Aqua released their third LP, Megalomania, in 2011. It reached #2 on the Danish album chart.

Here’s hoping third time is just as much of a charm as the first for these guilty pleasure favorites.
