Beck’s “Up All Night” Is A Total Snooze

Some of you younger readers may only know Beck as the guy who somehow beat out Beyoncé for Album of the Year at the 2015 Grammys. The album that did it, Morning Phase was a lovely, lush collection, and it was also incredibly boring. Beck wasn’t always boring! Just 20 years ago, he was the most brilliant genre-collider in all of pop. With “Dreams” and the declaration that his next album would be more upbeat, it seemed like his funk-pop mad scientist side would reemerge. But new song “Up All Night” drastically tempers expectations.

Like his last batch of material, it’s pristinely produced, and a total snooze. This is not recapturing the magic of the Odelay/Midnite Vultures/I’ll-even-throw-Guero-in-here days. This song does not make me want to stay up all night. It makes me want to wait for a fitting room at H&M.

Beck is boring now. He’ll fit right in.
