When George Michael dropped his David Fincher-directed “Freedom ’90” video in the fall of 1990, it was a bold and daring statement: the hugely successful pop singer threw caution for his commercial viability to the wind and refused to appear in the music video. He instead opted to enlist supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Tatjana Patitz to mug and writhe in front of the camera, as if to say — to borrow from the lyrics — it really doesn’t matter who’s fronting the visual, you “gotta have some faith in the sound…it’s the one good thing that I’ve got.”

Now, with Sony gearing up for an anniversary re-release of the song’s parent album, Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 (complete with an upcoming Showtime documentary), Vogue and director Gordon von Steiner recently took advantage of New York Fashion Week by re-creating the iconic video with a bevy of modern day models that includes, among others, Adriana Lima, Joan Smalls, Anna Ewers and Irina Shayk.

As with most things like this, there ain’t nothing like the real thing. But you can get a load of the new “Freedom ’90” above and bask in the sultry glow of the original below.
