On Wednesday (September 29), Shawn Mendes stopped by the Late Late Show to sing his Illuminate standout “Mercy.”

As expected, Mendes gave a soulful rendition of the track. Backed by a full band, the singer belted the song’s poignant lyrics amid mysterious green lights. The crowd also couldn’t get enough of the performance, as you could hear scores of girls screaming every time he began to sing.

Mendes also played a “totally unprompted” game of  ‘Better Then/Better Now’ with show host James Corden, where the two sang current hits and throwbacks by artists like Sia, TLC, Calvin Harris and the Spice Girls with the help of a capella group the Filharmonic.
