On Thursday (September 29), Blood Orange – real name Dev Hynes – stopped by The Daily Show to perform two songs ( “Juicy 1-4” And “Love Ya”) off his moving new album Freetown Sound.

Hynes gave soulful performances of both songs, crooning the numbers with the help of back-up singers and a band.  The British singer also spoke with the show’s host Trevor Noah about why music is the outlet he chooses when addressing issues like police brutality.

“I basically realized that music is the medium and the language that’s most natural for me,” he said. “So experiencing this stuff and living here and going through all of it, that was just the natural medication I was using to express myself. I wasn’t even particularly aware of a lot of this stuff or if it would be released or if I would put it out. It was the only way I could get through things.”
