In addition to being one of the most influential hip-hop artists of the last 10 years, Kid Cudi has built a following of hardcore fans in large part because of his emotional openness on record and through social media. This occasionally leads to some clunkers (various low-grade beefs, Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven), but mostly it endears him as one of the more authentic stars on the pop landscape. And last night (October 4), he shared a brutally honest note on Facebook explaining that he has checked himself into rehab for depression.

“I feel ashamed. Ashamed to be a leader and hero to so many while admitting I’ve been living a lie. It took me a while to get to this place of commitment, but it is something I have to do for myself, my family, my best friend/daughter and all of you, my fans,” he wrote. “Yesterday I checked myself into rehab for depression and suicidal urges. I am not at peace. I haven’t been since you’ve known me. If I didn’t come here, I wouldve done something to myself. I simply am a damaged human swimming in a pool of emotions everyday of my life. Theres a ragin violent storm inside of my heart at all times. Idk what peace feels like. Idk how to relax.”

And even with a serious mental health battle ahead of him, Cudi still made sure to update fans on the business end of things before he checked into the treatment facility: “The album is still on the way. Promise. I wanted to square away all the business before I got here so I could focus on my recovery. If all goes well ill be out in time for Complexcon and ill be lookin forward to seeing you all there for high fives and hugs.”

In addition to prepping the release of Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’, Kid Cudi was also scheduled to appear on the new season of EmpireHere’s hoping he gets the care he needs so that he can overcome this.
