Pop Perspective: Fergie's "M.I.L.F. $"
We dissect Fergie's polarizing new single "M.I.L.F. $" in the latest Pop Perspective.

After stumbling out of the gates with 2014 banger “L.A. Love (La La),” Fergie’s decade-in-the-making comeback album seemed to be back on track earlier this year. The flawless 41-year-old put the finishing touches on the opus, lovingly-dubbed Double Dutchess, in March and then started started promoting it. She headlined major summer festivals, teased a still-unreleased track called “Hungry” and officially got the new era under way with lead single “M.I.L.F. $.” And then everything went quiet.

It’s hard to pinpoint what went wrong. “M.I.L.F. $” wasn’t well received by radio and drew a mixed response by critics, but it topped the iTunes download chart and debuted at an impressive number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100. The star-studded video was even more successful, racking up 128+ million views to date. All in all, not a bad start — particularly at a time when misfires are routinely dismissed as buzz tracks and everyone politely pretends they never happened. Fergie could have simply moved on to single two without batting an eyelid.

What’s going on? Your guess is as good as mine, but social media is humming with rumors of an imminent relaunch. The source appears to be a Brazilian Black Eyed Peas fan website, which claims the “Glamorous” diva is dropping a new single on Friday (November 11). There’s no official confirmation, but now would be as good a time as any for Fergie to breathe some life into this comeback, especially if she’s still eyeing a fourth quarter release. Maybe it’s time to bring out the big guns and release Nicki Minaj-assisted bop “You Already Know.”
