We all know Justin Bieber‘s qualms with overzealous fans. On his current Purpose World Tour, Bieber announced that he was canceling all scheduled meet and greets and also done with taking any type of photos. He’s even recently stormed off stage after asking the crowd to stop screaming at his show in the UK. And now, the pop star opened up about his relationship with fans and the need for a security detail in Bodyguards: Secret Lives from the Watchtower, an upcoming documentary about those folks who protect public figures.

“Having security creates space for me, it creates boundaries, it creates a safe place for me,” Bieber says in the clip. “As the fans get older and are knowing themselves more, they start understanding how to act and they actually want to act a little bit more sane so that maybe they get my attention because at this point they’re screaming and super overwhelming, it’s hard for me to connect with you.”

The snippet also features cameos from the singer’s manager Scooter Braun and Mikey Arana, who helms Bieber’s security.

“I remember when I first started with him – it may sound crazy, but three, four little girls – they have so much strength that they would literally rip his shirt, take off his hoodie,” Arana reveals. “And if it’s a big crowd, you could lose him in the crowd … But as the fans have grown with him, so has their approach to be able to just come up to him and go, ‘Hey Justin, how are you?’ and engage in conversation.”

The documentary (out in theaters and on-demand on December 2) is directed by Jaren Hayman and follows the security teams of 50 CentNelson Mandela and more.
