Katy Perry Donates $10,000 To Planned Parenthood In Light Of Election 2016 Results
In light of the 2016 presidential election results, the past week has seen American women worried about their reproductive rights in the foreseeable future. President-elect Donald Trump has promised to repeal the Affordable Care Act and defund Planned Parenthood — two acts that would limit women’s access to affordable birth control and screenings for STIs, among other services.
In response, Katy Perry has taken action. On November 11, she publicly donated $10,000 to Planned Parenthood for “giving Katheryn Hudson [her government name] the knowledge to plan.” She explained further on Instagram, saying that Planned Parenthood clinics in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, Cailfornia, granted to access to healthcare she might not otherwise have had, with her “sheltered upbringing” and lack of health insurance.
“Planned Parenthood educated me on my body and my reproductive health, so that I could focus on my dreams and using my voice until I knew the timing was right for me to make a plan to have a family,” Katy says. “Since then, I have been able to focus wholeheartedly on bringing messages of strength and becoming a voice for others. Without this education, I may have had a different life path.”
