Nelly Furtado’s Comeback Gathers Momentum With “Pipe Dreams”
Nelly Furtado has been chipping away at album number six for the last couple of years, but the project now has a name, release date and ever-growing hype thanks to a pair of brilliant buzz tracks. The 37-year-old introduced us to her alt-pop side on the dizzyingly gorgeous “Islands Of Me” in September and now shows just how quirky she can be on mellow banger built around an otherworldly organ melody. At this rate, The Ride (due March 3, 2017) is shaping up to be an unusually glorious comeback.
The beauty of “Pipe Dreams” lies in its languid dreaminess. Nelly has always been an eccentric pop star (“Big Hoops” is still jaw-droppingly nuts) and that willingness to experiment is very much on display here as she sings about the blurred line between fantasy and reality. “A lot of [the new album] touches on that, in terms of sanity versus reality,” she told The Fader. “The comedown, the hangover after the rush, and how you put the pieces back together, and how you make amends with the realer parts of life.” Listen to the groove below and watch an album preview at the bottom of the post.
