Pop Perspective: Charli XCX's "After The Afterparty"
We rate and review Charli XCX's "After The Afterparty" in the latest Pop Perspective.

Songwriting queen Charli XCX was asked about her many credits in a new interview with Australian fashion magazine Grazia and opened up about penning “Same Old Love” for Selena Gomez. “This particular song was something I had written and she loved it and felt it related to her and that’s really how that came about,” the Brit reveals. However, she was tempted to keep it for herself. “There’s been some songs I wished I’d kept. Actually ‘Same Old Love’ was one of those songs that once I’d heard Selena sing it — and she sounded so great — I was like, ‘Oh my god, I want this song for myself.'”

So why did the 24-year-old give it away? “Partly because she had such a high profile relationship which was all over the press, it felt very real coming from her and I think a lot of the audience could really connect because of what had been going on,” Charli explains. “It was cool that really brought that song to life.” She also spoke about the direction of her new album, which is due early next year. “I would say [new single] ‘After The AfterParty’ is definitely a taste of what the album sounds like, it’s the most kind of pop sound on the record.”

“But there’s also a whole other sound to it, it’s much more electronic and much more — I don’t want to say like a rave because it’s not that full on — and more like a club. It’s like a party album.” Watch Charli talk about writing “Same Old Love” below and read the full interview here.
