Fresh off performing at the White House for the National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, Kelly Clarkson swung by TODAY to perform an emotional rendition of “It’s Quiet Uptown,” her cover from The Hamilton Mixtape. It was so emotional, in fact, that she got choked up at the end.

The song, from Hamilton, is about the death of Alexander Hamilton’s son, and in a quick chat with the hosts before her performance, Clarkson said she’s only made it through the ballad once without crying. “The problem is you want to be emotional. But it’s hard to be so emotional while you’re singing it because no sound will come out of my mouth if I start crying.”

This time she allllmost made it, managing to keep it together until she hit that last note. Watch below.
