Fiona Apple Returns With Anti-Trump “The Christmas Song” Cover
Election fallout has this holiday season shaping up to be a particularly bitter and cold one. But at least it’s gotten Fiona Apple out of hibernation. The singer channeled her “this world is bullshit” anger for an a cappella cover of Nat King Cole‘s “The Christmas Song,” turning it into an anti-Trump tirade which showed up on a fan Tumblr.
“Trump’s nuts roasting on an open fire / as he keeps nipping at his foes,” she begins, and it only gets bleaker from there. “Everybody knows that money and entitlement / can help to make the season white / Mothers of colors with their kids out of sight / will find it hard to sleep at night…They know that Trump is on his way / He’s got black boys in hoodies locked up on his sleigh.”
Apple finishes the video by tearing a picture of Trump while singing “Merry Christmas to you.”
