Jennifer Hudson and Ariana Grande came together during the encore of Hairspray Live!, which premiered on NBC last night (December 7). As the cast took their bows, they sang the hopeful, rousing “Come So Far (Got So Far to Go).”

This was originally written for the 2007 film adaptation of the Broadway musical, which was based on John Waters‘ 1988 film of the same name. But it was also an apt way to close out a musical in 2016, a year where the country stands more divided than ever.

Fresh off the Broadway version of The Color Purple, Jennifer also brought the house down as record store owner Motormouth Maybelle, with her knockout rendition of “I Know Where I’ve Been.”

Grande, who had one of the best albums of the year, starred as Penny Pingleton and gloriously belted “Without Love” with co-star Ephraim Sykes, who played Seaweed.
