When Spice Girls‘ third single “2 Become 1” topped the UK chart in December 1996, it was a big deal, as it marked the first of three consecutive years the girl group landed the all important Christmas #1 in their home country. (The following two times: “Too Much” in 1997 and “Goodbye” in 1998.)

Robbie Williams helped Spice Girls member Emma Bunton commemorate the 20-year anniversary of this pop achievement last night (December 20) by inviting her on stage for a duet performance of the Spice hit during his Heart FM gig at London venue Under The Bridge.

Incidentally, while Robbie and the rest of boy band Take That narrowly missed out on having the #1 single at Christmas in 1993 with “Babe” — they were bumped off the top by, um, Mr. Blobby — he redeemed himself by topping the UK chart over the holiday in 2001 with his Nicole Kidman duet “Something Stupid.” He was also part of the Band Aid 20 version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, which was #1 for four weeks between December 2004 and January 2005.
