Boy George Pulls A Boy George, Causes Controversy Over Tweet On Bisexuality

Folks expecting Boy George to not occasionally veer into provocative terrain clearly know nothing about the iconic crooner. Case in point: the Voice UK coach and Culture Club frontman tossed out a few quips on Twitter following claims by George Michael’s boyfriend Fadi Fawaz that his own account was hacked recently.

To recap, Fawaz opened up last week in a Daily Telegraph interview about finding Michael’s body in bed on Christmas morning. He also alluded to the fact that the pair’s relationship had “been very complicated recently.” This past weekend, Fawaz’s Twitter account was closed following tweets stating that George Michael tried “to kill himself many times.” Fawaz subsequently claimed that his account was hacked. (“It’s a bit scary to be honest,” he said in a statement released to Us Weekly. “I did not send those tweets.”)

Enter Michael’s friend and legendary pop peer Boy George, who apparently tried to inject some humor to the heavy situation by posting, “Ok. ‘My computer got hacked’ is like ‘I’m bisexual’ or ‘I’m sniffing because I have allergies!'”

This caused one fan to tweet her disappointment at the singer for “reduc[ing] my valid sexuality to a lie or joke.” Others on Twitter then joined in.

Boy George, in turn, went all Boy George on the irked tweeter, and several others who joined in, by firing off a volley of humorous jabs.

All of this caused website The Queerness to tap out an op-ed piece called “We Need Boy George Like A Fish Needs A Bicycle.” The piece states at one point, “Given Boy George’s history, it was sadly unsurprising to see him perpetuating bi phobia and bi erasure (as well as attacking a grieving husband and calling him a liar) Claiming that bisexuals are liars is an easy hit, and the mark of a bully is looking for the easy targets.” George was clearly amused.

One fan pointed out that by tweeting out the link to the article, George himself was drawing attention to it. His response: “I like to help the entrepreneurial scribblers!”

There you have it — just one of the various heavy tragedies happening in the world at the moment. Pray for survival.
