Ricky Reed Gets Personal On "Express Myself"
Ricky Reed comes full circle with surprise single "Express Myself."

EDIT: Post updated with Ricky’s hand-drawn animated video.

Everything came together for Ricky Reed last year. A career-making hot streak (Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty,” Meghan Trainor’s “No” and Twenty One Pilots’ “Ride,” for starters) was rewarded with a well-deserved Grammy nomination for Producer Of The Year and he made an unexpected return to the artist fold with “Express Myself.” (His first non-Wallpaper single). While that song is the musical equivalent of a therapy session, the hitmaker explores more traditional content on the follow-up. “Be The 1” drops January 27 and finds the happily married, soon-to-be dad in an understandably loved-up mood.

Interestingly, the earworm is actually about the early stages of relationship as opposed to all the good stuff that follows. “‘Be The 1’ is about the like that comes before the love,” Ricky explains. “You might walk into a party and meet someone you simply like being around. You might leave the party with that same person and spend the rest of your life together. A life-long love can start with deceptively casual beginnings.” That scenario plays out over a symphony of percussion and jagged synths. “You must be the prototype, other lovers couldn’t get it right,” he croons on the catchy chorus. “I, I put in overtime. Be the, be the one I like.”

If “Express Myself” was a reintroduction after a couple of years behind the boards, “Be The 1” is the artist/producer’s first stab at a pop radio play with its perky hooks and relatable subject matter. If this is any indication of what’s to come from the Nice Life head-honcho’s first LP (under the Ricky Reed moniker), it won’t be too long before he’s jostling for space on the charts next to his roster of clients. We’re excited to premiere the track below.
