G.R.L. Still Exists & Their New Single Is Actually Pretty Good
It looked like it was curtains for G.R.L. when Simone Battle tragically passed away in 2014. The ladies released a tribute single called “Lighthouse,” but disbanded shortly after and got to work on solo projects. (The most notable/notorious being Emmalyn Estrada’s “#FreeTitties”). But it wasn’t the end. The girl group reformed as a trio last year with a rejigged line-up of Lauren Bennett, Natasha Slayton and Jazzy Mejia — and casually dropped a new single in December.
Don’t be put off by the Microsoft Paint cover art or DIY music video. “Are We Good” is an A-Grade bop. Produced by Hook N Sling, the sexy banger is better than 90 percent of Fifth Harmony’s 7/27 or Little Mix’s Glory Days. This is a bouncy throwback to the Pussycat Dolls with attitude-filled lyrics and slick, dance floor-ready beats. Time will tell if G.R.L. can eek out an audience without the backing of a major, but they’re off to a pretty good start. Watch the bare-bones video up top or stream it below.
