Nelly Furtado’s Creative Rebirth Continues With “Cold Hard Truth”

Nelly Furtado is on the verge of a remarkable comeback with 6th LP, The Ride (due March 31). The Canadian pop star’s last album, The Spirit Indestructible, bombed spectacularly — both commercially and critically — and she seemed destined to fade away. Well, the 38-year-old had other ideas. The ’00s hitmaker recorded a couple of covers to remind us that she was still here and then teamed up with John Congleton (best known for his work with St. Vincent) to completely overhaul her sound.

And the results have been nothing short of spectacular. Perky synth-pop anthem “Islands Of Me” was one of 2016’s biggest surprises, while “Pipe Dreams” proved Nelly’s hazy, alt-pop credentials. Her winning streak continues with new single, “Cold Hard Truth,” which sounds like a cross between “Maneater” and one of the breezy, organic ditties from Folklore. This is all about the crunchy synths (surely a nod to the diva’s iconic partnertship with Timbaland) and fierce delivery. You can stream it below from midnight tonight.
