Ansel Elgort’s “Thief” Video Is Equal Parts ‘American Psycho’ & ’50 Shades’
Someone just asked me if Ansel Elgort’s pop career was a prank akin to Joaquin Phoenix’s foray into rap. I doubt it given the involvement of Island Records and producer CJ Baran, but, to be honest, I don’t really care. “Thief” just works for me in an over-the-top, ’80s throwback kind of way. I’m also genuinely mesmerized by the visual (above). If American Psycho anti-hero Patrick Bateman filmed a music video, it would look a lot like this. The Fault In Our Stars actor works out, inspects his abs in the mirror and moonwalks around his apartment in black leather. It’s nuts.
Oh, and he also gets intimate with real-life girlfriend Violetta Komyshan in scenes reminiscent of Fifty Shades Of Grey. (Thankfully, they kept the toys under lock and key). It’s a lot to process and walks the thin line between creepy and sexy, but again, I’m strangely here for it. Ansel first threw his hat into the pop ring last year with moody banger, “Home Alone.” (He had previously been working on club music under the pseudonym Ansolo). It promptly topped Spotify’s Global Viral Chart and landed him a record deal. Watch the neon-drenched visual up top.
