Camila Cabello Covers ‘Billboard,’ Previews New Music: 6 Photos
Camila Cabello‘s solo debut is taking shape. That’s the biggest takeaway from Billboard‘s latest cover story, where Camila not only previews new music, but explains how this material is truer to her than what she did as part of Fifth Harmony.
While in the studio with producers Andrew “Pop” Wansel (Alessia Cara) and Frank Dukes (Drake), Camila has been inspired by Cuban music, Shakira, Alicia Keys‘ “No One” and Rihanna‘s ANTI. But Caribbean music at large also seems to be a key influence.
“It’s only natural, I need some love from you / I might pull up on you / It’s only human to, wanna do da tings we do,” she sings a file titled “It’s Only Natural,” and with a “slight patois,” says writer Chris Martins. Another song “sounds like Sia planting her flag on ‘One Dance.’”
While Camila can’t bring herself to talk about her split from 5H in detail (“It makes me sad”), she says that she doesn’t regret her decision. “We didn’t write our records,” she says. “We were interpreting somebody else’s story. Fifth Harmony is an entity or identity outside all of us, and I don’t think anybody felt individually represented by the sound — we didn’t make it.”
