Justin Timberlake: Frank Ocean Should Have Won Album Of The Year Grammy
Justin Timberlake usually sticks to harmless self-promo on social media. Right now, though, he is facing ire for airing his opinion on the 2017 Grammy Awards, just when viewers had recovered. Taking to Twitter, he said, “While I’m at it… Frank Ocean had the REAL Album Of The Year with BLONDE. #NotFakeNews”
Frank doesn’t need Justin defending him. “Winning a TV award doesn’t christen me successful,” he said in an open letter, explaining why he didn’t submit Blonde for consideration, period. He saw a “cultural bias” that rewarded maintaining the status quo as opposed to actually ambitious music. The example he gave was Taylor Swift‘s 1989 beating Kendrick Lamar‘s To Pimp a Butterfly for Album of the Year.
Justin also apparently missed the larger, more important discussion that revolved around Album of the Year. Adele‘s 25 beating Beyonce‘s Lemonade was a major upset that reignited a debate over the Grammys’ larger race problem — how black music gets overlooked in the main categories despite its widespread influence. It’s telling that Adele initially didn’t want the trophy, either.
“I thought it was [Beyonce’s] year. What the fuck does she have to do to win album of the year?” Adele said backstage. Meanwhile, Justin is out here revealing that he wasn’t even listening to the conversation. See his unnecessary tweets below.
