RuPaul Takes A Stand On New LP ‘American’

RuPaul’s very existence is an act of political defiance, but the pop/drag icon prefers to keep his music light and playful — offering an escape from the ugliness of reality. That changes somewhat on 11th LP, American (due March 24). The project was influenced by the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath, which is readily apparent on the title track. “Everybody came here wanting to be free, New York to California see the shining sea,” Ru sings over Kummerspeck’s thumping beats. “I am American, American, American, just like you too.”

“The song ‘American’ is a beck and call to reclaim what this country really stands for which is life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” the media mogul tells NextNowNext. “And I think it’s so important now to do that. What we have that the other side does not have is love and spirit and dancing and laughter and joy of life. That is our secret weapon.” American is RuPaul’s second album of 2017. (Be sure to pre-order it here). Check out his recent remixed best of, Remember Me: Essential Vol. 1 below.
