Kendall Jenner is reportedly mortified over her cringeworthy Pepsi ad. But one person, Madonna, is having a good laugh over the whole incident. Just when Pepsi pulled the commercial, Madonna posted a Throwback Thursday photo on Instagram one day early. It’s the 1999 Grammy Awards, and the “Unapologetic Bitch” wears all red while holding a can of Coke.

Madonna also reposted Kendall’s Pepsi ad, saying, “When you wake up and realize that Shit just really doesn’t make sense!” She does have experience on that front: In 1989, Pepsi pulled Madonna’s own ad — a comparatively more innocent affair, set to then-current single “Like a Prayer” — because that same song’s controversial video debuted the next day. “When you’ve got an ad that confuses people or concerns people, it just makes sense that that ad goes away,” a Pepsi spokesman said at the time.

Madonna’s Pepsi ad featured an 8-year-old Madonna, watching what grownup Madonna would become; in that scenario, she enters a black church and bonds with the choir, singing along. Kendall’s, set to Skip Marley‘s “Lions,” features too many head-scratching moments to unpack. The model Kardashian member catches the eye of a protester with a goatee, abandons her photo shoot by thrusting her blond wig at a (rightly) disgruntled black woman bystander, and offers a can of Pepsi to a cop, to actual cheers.

If you think Madonna shouldn’t be picking yet another fight with Pepsi, please note that even Bernice King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke up after seeing that ad. “If only Daddy would have known about the power of #Pepsi,” she said on Twitter.
