With a performer like Lady Gaga, you expect surprises, if not shock value. The last thing that Coachella goers expected was for her to debut a new song. “And if you say you’re OK, I’m gonna heal you anyway / Promise I’ll always be there, promise I’ll be the cure,” Mother Monster sings in “The Cure,” which she promptly released to streaming services.

She also advertised “The Cure” as her new single, according to Forbes.

At Coachella, Gaga used her sincere lyrics as an excuse to thank Little Monsters. “I love you guys so much,” she told the crowd. “I’m telling you, I have been through so much in my life, and I’ve seen so much. And you cure me every time with your love.”

Compared to the roots music-indebted Joanne“The Cure” marks a return to pop for Gaga. (Nick Monson, who helped with ARTPOP, is reportedly a featured producer.) But there is no mistaking “The Cure” for the industrial dance pop of 2009 debut The Fame. With its airy production and finger snaps, Gaga’s latest is streamlined, utterly sweet R&B-pop — if Spice Girls existed today.
