Kelly Rowland On Her Destiny’s Child Friendships & Being A Role Model

Kelly Rowland Hits The Studio With Khalid
Kelly Rowland hit the studio with Khalid, 6LACK & Quiñ. Looks like 'KR5' is coming.

Kelly Rowland landed on the cover of Sydney Morning Herald weekend insert Sunday Life and opened up about her connection with the other Children of Destiny. “Bey always says to be authentic,” the singer, who has signed on to be a judge on the new season of The Voice Australia, reveals. “Some people get it early — Solange got it sooo early, she always made up her own rules. I think with me it comes with age.” How has she managed to stay so close with Beyonce and Michelle Williams? “We’re all secure within ourselves and within our gifts,” the 36-year-old explains. “I think you have to be comfortable with yourself to be comfortable with others.”

The “Kisses Down Low” diva, who is currently recording her fifth album, also has a special connection with Beyonce’s mom, Tina Lawson. In fact, the Instagram-conquering matriarch helped Kelly accept her beauty. “She had all this artwork up and it was all these beautiful African-American or African artists. And she said, ‘Look at your cheekbones, your cheekbones look like that. Look at your skin color, your skin color looks like that’,” the hitmaker remembers. “She would literally get me in front of the mirror and tell me how beautiful my chocolate skin was to the point where, when I moved to Miami, I was just baking in the sun every day [saying], ‘Ooh, I just want to get darker.'”

Kelly now wants to share that message with a new generation of girls. “I wasn’t just a face for myself, I was a face for other girls who looked like me and I don’t want them to see themselves and not see how incredible they are in their own skin,” she says. With a new TV gig, recording sessions and a best-selling book (below) on the shelves, it’s fair to say that the “Motivation” singer plans to be everywhere in 2017. After all, her motto is “outwork everybody.” Why? “So many people want the same thing or have the same dream you do, and what separates you from everybody else is your work ethic.”
