Camila Cabello teases the video for debut solo single "Crying In The Club."

Plot twist. Camila Cabello’s “Crying In The Club” samples Christina Aguilera’s legendary 1999 bop, “Genie In A Bottle.” The credits for the 20-year-old’s debut solo single surfaced online today (May 18) and they are genuinely staggering. Not only are the “Genie” songwriters represented, there’s also an A-List line-up of talent including Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat and Sia. Clearly no expense has been spared on this project. Which I probably should have guessed from the cover being beamed onto buildings around the world.

There’s nothing wrong with a clever sample (see Selena Gomez’s “Bad Liar”) but this feels a little gimmicky, particularly after pulling the same trick on “Bad Things.” I guess it depends on how artfully “Genie” is weaved into Camila’s song. Anyway, we’ll find out in about 12 hours. “Crying In The Club” is the first taste of the former Fifth Harmony diva’s debut LP, The Hurting. The Healing. The Loving.. The album is expected to arrive later this year and clearly has the full weight of Epic Records behind it.
