Lorde's "Green Light" Is An Angry Break-Up Anthem
And she's back! Lorde returns today with a synth-pop anthem called "Green Light."

Lorde’s Melodrama era began with a whimper, as opposed to the bang we were all expecting, when “Green Light” came and went in a matter of weeks. The Kiwi’s ’80s synth-pop experiment sounded like a B-side from 1989 and raised the question if parting ways with producer Joel Little was a wise decision. Buzz track “Liability” was a step in the right direction, but she really hits her stride with “Perfect Places.” Produced by the singer, Jack Antonoff and Frank Dukes, this sounds like the logical next step from Pure Heroine.

“Are you lost enough? Have another drink, get lost in us,” the 20-year-old ponders in a verse. “This is how we get notorious.” The song really comes to life, however, in the soaring chorus. “All of the things we’re taking, ’cause we are young and we’re ashamed,” she sings over Jack’s trademark ’80s synths. “Sends us to perfect places.” It taps into the same rich vein of millenial restlessness and ennui that gave songs like “Team” and “Glory And Gore” so much bite, while still repositioning her as a synth-pop siren. More of this please.
