Julia Michaels’ “Uh Huh” Is Every Bit As Catchy As “Issues”

Julia Michaels does it again with “Uh Huh.” The 23-year-old already ranks as one of the year’s break-out pop stars thanks to the massive success of “Issues,” but her new single has the potential to be even bigger. Produced by Mattman & Robin, the singer/songwriter’s latest is brighter, bolder and more instant. “It’s electric how symmetric we both get when you lay beside me,” she coos over plucked guitar strings in a verse. “It’s phonetic, how our mouths grip almost too tight.” That takes us to the obscenely catchy chorus.

“Uh-huh! I think you’re movin’ in too close,” Julia sings on the loved-up track. “But I think that it’s my body wanting it the most like uh-huh!” There’s even a little outro over chunky piano keys. It doesn’t sound like anything else on radio, which is quite an achievement given that her sparse, emotional approach is being imitated by everyone from songwriting clients to random copycats. I just wonder if this arrived a little prematurely given that “Issues” is still climbing the Billboard Hot 100. (It should crack the top 10 next week). You can stream “Uh Huh” below from midnight (ET) tonight.
