Liam Payne’s “Strip That Down” Video Is As Awkward As The Song

Liam Payne’s “Strip That Down” arrived in a blaze of hype last month, but one listen is all you need to know that it’s a major misstep. The Ed Sheeran-penned banger is painfully generic and littered with corny lyrics like “you know I used to be in 1D, now I’m free.” It wouldn’t be so bad if hip-hop was a natural fit for the Brit, but everything about it feels forced. Unfortunately, the same goes for the video. The clip, which dropped today (June 2) veers perilously close to parody as the 23-year-old poses next to pimped-out rides and video girls.

And it gets worse when Quavo arrives. The Migos rapper appears completely at ease in his surroundings, while Liam looks like he accidentally wandered on to the set. “Strip That Down” is doing well at pop and rhythmic radio, and should get a welcome boost on iTunes with the arrival of the visual. However, you only get one chance to make a first impression and this isn’t a good one — no matter how well the song eventually performs. Watch the video (if you must) below.
