Lorde Spins Her Wheels With Generic Youth Anthem “Sober”
Lorde’s sophomore LP, Melodrama, drops next week (June 16) and it’s shaping up to be something of a non-event. Lead single “Green Light” underwhelmed and the only buzz track worth a second spin is “Perfect Places” — a biting snapshot of millennial ennui with a synth-pop soundtrack. The Kiwi rolls out another track today and it covers exactly the same territory. Only without the insight. “King and Queen of the weekend, ain’t a pill that could touch our rush. But what will we do when we’re sober?” she sings on the chorus.
“When you dream with the fever bet you wish you could touch our rush, but what will we do when we’re sober?” I don’t know. Get a part-time job? Do some homework? “Sober” isn’t a terrible song. It’s just terribly familiar. Pure Heroine stood out because it presented different aspects of teen life in suburbia. Lorde is a couple of years older, but it sounds like she hasn’t really moved on or found a new muse.
