Lorde Apologizes For Unflattering Description Of Celebrity Friendships
That was quick. Yesterday (June 19) Lorde found herself in hot water after comparing her friendship with Taylor Swift (among other celebrities) to being friends with someone with a serious illness. “It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies,” she said in an interview with The Guardian. “There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do… it’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disorder.” Unsurprisingly, the comments did not go over well with fans, who were quick to point out that it was inappropriate.
One fan noted that it was doubly wrong because Lorde and Taylor’s friend and fellow pop princess, Selena Gomez, does in fact suffer from lupus — an autoimmune disorder that has left her hospitalized in the past. The Revival hitmaker is pictured wearing a hospital band on the single cover of her summer bop “Bad Liar” as she was hospitalized for treatment before the photoshoot.
The singer recognized that she had made an error and hopped on Twitter to apologize for her comments. “I fucked up & that was really insensitive. I’m sorry,” Lorde wrote in response to one of her concerned fans. It was a succinct apology, but one that was clearly appreciated. One fan who also suffers from an autoimmune disorder thanked her for recognizing her error and righting the wrong. Check out the Grammy winner’s apology and fan response below!
