Lorde's 'Melodrama': Album Review
Lorde returns with her sophomore LP, which explores the dangers of letting loose.

A pop star’s work is never done. Lorde may have topped the charts with sophomore LP Melodrama last month, but she is still in full promo mode for the project’s second single, “Perfect Places.” The Kiwi singer stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers to belt out the twinkling song, delivering yet another compelling performance. She stripped back some of the single’s production, opening with an acoustic section supported by the somber keys of a piano before she was joined by a choir.

Wearing matching tracksuits emblazoned with the album’s logo, they provided vocal backing and added a tinge of youthful rebellion while Lorde questioned the benefits of escaping reality with a bottle of booze. The uplifting performance will likely give the track a bit of a boost on the charts and connect better than experimental lead single, “Green Light.” Although it was a respectable top 20 hit, critics expected something more explosive for the follow-up to Pure Heroine. “Perfect Places” could be just that.

While on the show, she also sat down with Seth Meyers to talk about the creative process behind creating her LP and her experiences with music synesthesia. The conversation turned to in-demand producer Jack Antonoff, who worked with Lorde on the majority of Melodrama. She had nothing but kind things to say about him and referred to him as both her work husband and a sibling while recounting some of the memories they shared recording. Check out the performance up top and the interview below.
