OneRepublic's 'Oh My My': Album Review
10 years into their career and OneRepublic is still on top. We review their new album.

OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder has graced Schon! Magazine with a fashionable but laid-back photoshoot. Posing barefoot in a series of chic looks, the “Counting Stars” crooner delivers pensive stares around a starkly beautiful, tropical oasis. Within the pages of the magazine, he also discussed his latest musical projects with the band and other solo ventures writing hits for some of music’s biggest names.

Recently OneRepublic has undergone a shift in their release strategy. Instead of unleashing official singles to radio and embarking on intensive promotional tours, they have decided to just drop songs as they finish recording them. “In a way, it’s been the most freeing 9 months I’ve had in 10 years because I don’t have to do any promo,” Ryan said of the decision, which has clearly sparked some creative juices in the group. This year alone the group has unveiled several songs including their latest release “Rich Love” — a collaboration with Seeb.

The EDM-tinged release was the brainchild of Ryan and his bandmate Brent Kutzle, but it was co-opted by the production group who transformed it into its final form. Although it vibrates with synths and boasts a danceable production, it is unlikely that the band will chase a similar sound with upcoming releases. “I’ve returned to writing everything on acoustic guitar or piano so I have a feeling the next thing we do is going to be rooted in a very organic way and would be a lot more soulful,” he explained. The end goal is simple but evocative music that both he and his fans can connect with on an emotional level.

While the band has enjoyed a more relaxed schedule, Ryan has a variety a solo projects in the works. Earlier this year he hit the studio with Selena Gomez to pen tracks for her upcoming album and described one of their songs as a “heartfelt, goose-bumpy mid-tempo.” Since then the songwriter who has crafted hits for the likes of Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson has worked with Camila Cabello on her debut album as well as Paul McCartney, U2, The Killers and Jessie Ware. He described his work with Paul as “my favorite week in my life” and some of his best sessions ever. Sounds like he’s keeping busy and got some serious hits up his sleeves.
