Kesha Delivers An Emotional Set At ‘Good Morning America,’ Says ‘Rainbow’ Saved Her

Kesha took over the stage at Good Morning America for another stirring performance of her power ballad “Praying” this morning (August 9) ahead of the release of her Rainbow LP on Friday. Standing in front of colorful swags of fabric and graphic stars, she delivered one of her strongest live vocals to date and truly embodied the single’s emotional message. Ending with a steadying breath, the audience broke into applause as the songstress fought back tears of joy to be onstage again. Emotions were lifted as she moved into her empowering anthem “Woman.” The track was updated to include the proclamation “I’m a nasty woman,” the insult turned slogan that was adopted by Hillary Clinton and her supporters during her presidential campaign.

While on set, the “Hymn” pop star sat down to chat with host Robin Roberts about the process of recording her album, the meaning behind her lead single and the joy of recording with Dolly Parton. “This song is just really important because it talks about me personally going through something very hard, lots of hard things, making it through, not giving up, and finding empathy on the other side,” she said of “Praying.” The single, which dropped in June, addresses a variety of battles she hass faced including her public legal feud with producer Dr. Luke, but its message is one of healing. That message translates through the rest of the album as well.

“I think this record has quite literally saved my life. And I hope you guys like it, and I hope you can hear it, and I hope it helps people,” she said before discussing the meaning behind the LP’s colorful title. “I think color symbolizes hope,” she explained. It didn’t hurt that the rainbow represented the LGBTQ community who have been avid supporters of the “Tik Tok” hitmaker for years. “I have like 10 rainbow tattoos,” she said with a laugh, revealing that the title’s hopeful message has translated into her personal life.

Things are ratcheting up for Kesha as her album edges closer. In the week of its release, “Praying” is sitting comfortably within the top 10 on the iTunes charts, and the single is rising on the Billboard Hot 100 following her latest string of performances. Buzz track “Learn To Let Go” is also making its debut on the lower rungs of the chart this week. With the media attention around her first release in years, Kesha may end up topping the album charts yet again. Check out some footage of the performances and interview below!
