Bonnie McKee Unveils Her Gritty, Voyeuristic “Thorns” Video
“Thorns” is Bonnie McKee’s first new release since her 2015 EP, Bombastic. And it couldn’t be more different from zippy pop songs that graced that four-song set. Like everyone else on planet earth circa 2017, the singer/songwriter is in a darker, contemplative mood. “I don’t want to hurt you, I want your hands all over,” she coos on the mid-tempo anthem. “But do you know how to handle me cause… I got thorns.” It wouldn’t be a Bonnie song without a massive hook, however, and that comes in the post chorus (“that’s what you get when you pick a rose”).
Pop’s “American Girl” dropped the video today (September 13) and it’s a grainy, voyeuristic affair that was shot entirely on VHS through the POV of frequently-visible director Darren Craig. The visual finds Bonnie writhing on a fountain, licking her switchblade and striking sexy poses in a hotel room. Just your normal every day stuff. The result is a cross between a ’90s cable show (according to the press release it was inspired by Cops) and an unusually arty and non-explicit porno. Watch the memorable clip up top.
