Mariah Carey was honored as a ’90s game-changer at last night’s (September 18) Hip Hop Honors for being one of the first artists to feature rappers on mainstream pop songs. To celebrate her award, the flawless 47-year-old belted out a remix of “Honey” featuring Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri, The Lox and Mase. She slayed, but you wouldn’t know it from the reaction on social media. Criticisms included the legendary diva’s voice, unsteady movement, unflattering outfit and even her weight (gross). Honestly, the time has come to leave Mimi the fuck alone.

I’m the first to admit that Mariah can be hit or miss live. When the pop icon is in the right frame of mind, she can still hit all the high notes and put on a vocal master class. Other times, she phones it in from her chaise lounge. I’ve seen her in both modes and enjoyed them equally (albeit for different reasons). However, she was trying last night. A body double abseiled down a building, before the real Mimi emerged to belt out “Honey” while perched on a golden jet skit (a nod to the iconic video) and then sitting inside a shiny chopper.

The enduring hitmaker sounded great and looked like she was having fun, particularly when her special guests joined her on stage. The only real issue was her stage coverage. Mariah looked nervous and needed a pair of dancers to escort her between setups. I think this is partly Mimi playing up to her diva image and also the fear of falling in gigantic heels. Anyway, you watch the superstar perform live for the vocals — not choreography. So what’s the problem?
