Katy Perry's 'Witness': Album Review
Katy Perry boldly explores club sub-genres on her banger-heavy new album.

Katy Perry delivered a stirring speech about the Las Vegas shooting that left more than 50 dead and hundreds injured during a performance on her Witness Tour. Last night (October 2), she took the stage for the first of two shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The 32-year-old took a moment after performing her Witness ballad “Save As Draft” to turn attention to victims of the recent attack.

“I wanna take this moment right now for Las Vegas here tonight,” Katy announced. She used the moment to highlight the power of music to bring people together and to overcome adversity. “Listen, I know it’s been a tough day but music is special. It’s magic. It’s something that unites us. There’s a community here that we need to take care of. That we need to surround. That we need to lift up. And I know that we all feel very disconnected sometimes, but I know music brings us together. And it should never be a place of fear, right?”

After the powerful message the hitmaker encouraged fans in the audience to reach out to people around them and introduce themselves to any strangers. Shouts of “I love you” reverberated through the arena as they came together and took her advice. “No one’s gonna steal our joy. No one’s gonna wilt our flowers, rip or wings. No one’s gonna take our power from us,” she ended her speech before moving into a roaring rendition of “Power.” It was a brief but evocative tribute in the face of tragedy.

Katy, Miley Cyrus and countless others are sharing an important message: In the face of trauma, music will always bring people together. Watch Katy’s speech below.
