Christina Aguilera’s “America” Is Sprawling And Patriotic

Christina Aguilera is still crafting her highly anticipated followup to 2012’s Lotus, but today (November 3) she shared a taste of new music with her patriotic release, “America.” The track is included on the soundtrack for Served Like A Girl, a documentary about female war veterans. It sees her getting a little folksy while teaming up with Linda Perry for a stripped back anthem.

“People come and go through these hotel rooms. Looking for a chance to make dreams come true in America. There’s a great big future in this promised land. Everyone deserves to hold it in their hands, in America,” she sings over simple strings on the opening lines. Xtina keeps things fairly reserved, but she manages to build up to a soaring delivery on the bridge. After all, it would not be a true release from the “Let There Be Love” siren without some soulful belting.

Otherwise, it is a pretty but fairly standard song. It will will likely sate fans starving for new music from the legend, but it doesn’t offer much of a sonic hint of what to expect when she finally releases her album. Regardless it is nice to see Christina working with Linda Perry again. The songwriter has crafted some of her most iconic tracks including “Beautiful,” “Candyman” and “Lift Me Up,” and it is clear that their chemistry is still going strong. Rumor has it that the twosome have worked together on the new LP. Hopefully they have worked up something even fiercer.

Other notable tracks on the soundtrack include offerings from Pink, Gwen Stefani, Natasha Bedingfield and Pat Benatar. All of them were written by Perry and offer a slightly different angle from the usual sounds of the pop hitmakers. Listen to “America” below!
