On November 6, 2017, 30-year-old rapper Meek Mill was sentenced to 2-4 years in a Pennsylvania state prison after a minor violation of his probation over a case that has haunted him for almost 10 years. His sentencing sparked a wildfire of reaction among his fans who took to social media with the hashtag #freemeekmill. A Change.org petition was created with over 360,000 signatures including celebrities such as Jay-Z and Kevin Hart standing behind Mill. At a protest at the Philadelphia Center City, rapper Rick Ross went so far as to declare the sentencing “An abortion of justice.” Mill’s case was seen as an example of the need for criminal justice reform in the United States and rattled the hip-hop community. All of the outrage and the movement to free Mills didn’t work out in the end.
