Iggy Azalea Opens Up On Quavo-Assisted “Savior,” Clarifies Production Credits

Iggy Azalea Unveils The Cover Of 'Savior'
The Aussie rapper reveals the cover and release date of new single 'Savior.'

After crashing and burning with “Mo Bounce” and “Switch,” Iggy Azalea is hoping it’s a case of third time lucky with “Savior.” The Quavo-assisted bop is certainly catchy enough to be big. “Cause my heart beats for you only, I wonder if you even know me,” the Aussie hitmaker ponders over lilting, dancehall-inspired synths. “Countin’ down every moment that I wait for ya (I wait for ya).” Throw in an instantly hummable chorus and a clever interpolation of Lisa Stansfield’s “Been Around The World,” and you have all the ingredients of a radio hit.

However, there’s already a hitch. Genius and Tidal mistakenly revealed that Dr. Luke co-wrote and co-produced the song, which sparked (another) backlash. Iggy was quick to jump on Twitter and set the record straight. “It’s produced by [Cirkut] and another kid MHL who have production agreements with Luke. Their deals and who they are tied in with business wise in no way make ME ‘working’ with Dr Luke. Try again.” The disgraced producer was subsequently removed from the credits of the aforementioned websites.

Time will tell if people can overcome their issues the rapper, but showing a more vulnerable side on “Savior” is a smart move. “It is not a record about you needing a man or a woman to come and save you in a relationship,” the 27-year-old said in a behind-the-scenes video. “It’s about you being your own savior and finding your own strength within yourself to figure it the fuck out.” Iggy admits that she penned the song, which was originally intended for her scrapped Digital Distortion album, at a very dark time.

“[The song] was created at a time when I felt so stagnant & alone, but I just couldn’t pick up the phone and admit to even my closest friends how hopeless I felt,” she tweeted recently. “So I hope I can connect with anyone else that’s been/going thru it via this song.” Iggy’s latest has already been released in some parts of the world. You can stream it below in the US from midnight ET. It’s the first taste of her sophomore LP, now called Surviving The Summer.
