Apology Unaccepted: Rihanna Responds To Offensive Snapchat Advertisement

Rihanna took Snapchat to task after the company ran an insensitive ad that appeared to make light of domestic violence. Last weekend the app ran a “Would You Rather” advertisement that asked users if they would prefer to “Slap Rihanna” or “Punch Chris Brown.” The situation appeared to allude to the domestic violence the 30-year-old suffered at the hands of her then-boyfriend in 2009 and created an almost immediate uproar. On Tuesday, Snapchat issued an apology for the ad, which they said was run “in error.” But today (March 15) the pop icon took to social media to reply to the controversy.

Posting a story on her Instagram, Rihanna held nothing back. “Now SNAPCHAT I know you already know you ain’t my fav app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess,” she wrote. “I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’ that dumb! You spend money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and made a joke of it!!!”

She went on to explain the impact this could have on all victims of domestic violence and took a stand in their honor. “This isn’t about my personal feelings, cause I don’t have much of them…but all the women, children and men that have been victims of DV in the past and especially the ones who haven’t made it out yet…you let us down! Shame on you. Throw the whole app-oligy away.” Activists including Chelsea Clinton have previously shared a similar response online, but it is nice to see the “Wild Thoughts” siren taking a stand as well.
