Kylie Minogue’s Golden promo blitz continues with a mini-concert on Australian TV. Using the same set and much of the setlist of her European club tour, the pop icon debuted the album’s title track and belted out “Dancing.” She even covered Dolly Parton’s “Islands In The Stream,” but more about that later. Let’s start with “Golden” — a euphoric country-pop anthem that tackles the usually taboo topic of aging. At a time when pop stars are being put out to pasture at 35, Kylie raises a dainty middle finger to the status quo.

“We’re not young and we’re not old, when the story’s not yet told,” the 49-year-old sings on the catchy pre-chorus. “Won’t be warned and can’t be sold, we are golden.” That leads to the empowering chorus. “Get knocked down, back up again. We’re golden, golden — that’s who we are.” As with “Dancing,” there’s even a mini-drop to hold the attention of dance-pop fans coming along for the country adventure. It’s easy to dismiss a genre-swap like this as a cynical marketing move, but everything about Golden seems personal and refreshingly direct.

Now for that cover. Kylie has been belting out Dolly Parton’s “Islands In The Stream” at live dates for a while now, but she finally brings the ’80s classic to TV and clearly has the time of her life doing it. Some might roll their eyes at the camp throwback, but the enduring hitmaker is fresh out of fucks this era. Dolly is one of her idols and she will belt out a karaoke classic if she wants to.
