Social media has been buzzing with rumors about The Weeknd “doing a Beyonce” all week. Fans first caught whiff of a potential surprise album when the R&B superstar posted a serious of Instagram videos with the simple caption “mastering.” The whispers reached a fever pitch when a billboard went up in London advertising a release called My Dear Melancholy along with the tagline “new album from The Weeknd available now.” The LP was confirmed earlier today by the man himself. “Tonight,” was all he had to add.

While it’s always dangerous to read too much into marketing, the morose title and red-light cover art hint at the 28-year-old returning to the dark and dangerous soundscape of 2013 debut LP, Kiss Land. He edged towards pop on breakthrough album, Beauty Behind The Madness, and made an unashamed bid for superstardom on 2016’s Grammy-winning Starboy. That album produced five top 50 hits, including the chart-topping title track and Daft Punk-assisted “I Feel It Coming.” He’s currently sitting pretty in the top 10 with Black Panther anthem “Pray For Me.”
