Britney Spears delivered an empowering speech while accepting the prestigious Vanguard Award at the 2018 GLAAD Media Awards tonight (April 12). Back in February it was announced that she was selected as this year’s recipient because of her contributions to the LGBTQ community over her lengthy career. “An irrefutable icon, Britney Spears has entertained the world while also embodying the spirit of GLAAD’s Vanguard Award by speaking out on significant issues that face her fans – from the Dream Act to anti-transgender bills in Texas,” Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD said of the decision.

Dressed in a dazzling silver dress, the pop icon took the stage at the event to accept her award. Getting visibly emotional, she also imparted an inspirational message. “Society has always put such an emphasis on what’s normal. And to be different is unusual or seen as strange. But to be accepted unconditionally and to be able to express yourself as an individual through art is such a blessing,” she said.

“Events like this, the one we are attending here tonight, show the world that we are not alone. We can all join hands together and know that we are all beautiful. And we can lift each other up and show our gifts without hesitation. Being a mother has shown me what it means to love unconditionally. And you all in this room have shown me what it means to be loved unconditionally.”

Other highlights from the evening include Brit posing for a photo with Adam Rippon and Gus Kenworthy. The out Olympians became fan favorites at the winter games this year, and they famously exchanged comments with the pop goddess on Twitter. Adam also mentioned the “Slumber Party” siren and her habit of posting regular fashion shows on her fantastic Instagram account. “Every time Britney Spears does a runway walk on Instagram, a little gay child gets his wings,” he joked.

The 36-year-old has been a longtime ally of the community. Last year she teamed up with Billboard to participate in the publication’s Love Letters to the LGBTQ Community project during Pride Month. Her handwritten letter expressed admiration. “I have a secret to share with you. You see, it’s actually you that lifts me up,” she wrote. “Your stories are what inspire me, bring me joy and make me and my sons strive to be better people.” In 2016 she joined forces with Justin Tranter, Julia Michaels, BloodPop, Selena Gomez and more to record the charity single “Hands” in honor of the lives lost in the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting.

Britney joins the likes of previous winners including Jennifer Lopez, Cher, Janet Jackson and Demi Lovato. Watch her inspiring acceptance speech and check out some pictures she shared from the event below!
