The Chainsmokers Unite With Drew Love On New Single “Somebody”

The Chainsmokers are hitting their stride with the release of their Drew Love-assisted new single, “Somebody.” Arriving today (April 20), it is the pair’s strongest release in 2018 and boasts one of their most restrained productions to date. Although Alex Pall and Drew Taggart have helmed club-ready numbers and are tinkering with an alt-rock edge recently, their latest is a more introspective moment. On it, Love and Taggart trade off vocals. Singing about their desire to make a name for themselves, it is a refreshingly honest moment. “In a town full of fancy cars and crowded bars and supermodels, looks exactly the way it did inside my head when I dreamed about it,” Love sings in a sweet falsetto on the chorus.

However, he realizes he needs more than physical possessions. “All the things I could live without. I need it now, cause they’re all around me. Only thing that I can’t afford is to lose myself tryna be somebody.” Taggart comes in on the verses, and his voice effortlessly compliments their featured vocalist as he delivers a cautionary tale. “You should’ve known better than to listen to your heart again,” he warns. The production twinkles over the soundscape. Of course, the duo included a bass-heavy drop, and it adds an unexpected level of dimension to the mournful keys and atmospheric synths.

“Somebody” will join the previously released “Sick Boy,” “You Owe Me” and “Everybody Hates Me” on the pair’s forthcoming sophomore album. Recently they opened up to Billboard about plans to gradually release the project by unveiling one song from the LP every month through 2018. The schedule draws parallels to how they began their rebrand with new music every month in 2015 and could revolutionize how albums are rolled out in a digital age. Hopefully they touch on a track as transformative as “Roses” or “Don’t Let Me Down” in the process. As it stands, their latest manages to bottle some of the wistful vibes that make their content so relatable. With any luck it will find some love on the charts.
