Charli XCX Reveals She Also Recorded “The Middle,” Maren Morris Responds
Earlier this week, songwriting and production outfit Monsters & Strangerz told Variety that 12 different female artists recorded a demo of Zedd & Grey’s “The Middle” before they settled on Maren Morris’ vocal. Other divas in the running included Carly Rae Jepsen, Camila Cabello, Bebe Rexha, Demi Lovato and Lauren Jauregui. The story was destined to make waves given that it lifts the veil on the industry’s conveyor-like approach to pop and soon went viral on social media. Charli XCX now reveals that she recorded the hit too.
“I cut this song 2 but honestly the whole thing was waaayy too high in pitch for me & my 5am party voice,” the Brit tweeted yesterday (April 25). “Also I’m not sure Zedd was fuckin w my robot levels of autotune. In my opinion [Maren] sounds soooo beautiful on this song & Sarah Aarons is a totally genius pop writer.” The country diva finally responded to the saga by replying to Charli. “You’re a queen and all these women are absolutely killing it at radio/in shows/with fans/in sales, so there really is no drama.”

Thanks, babe. You’re a queen and all these women are absolutely killing it at radio/in shows/with fans/in sales, so there really is no drama. 👯♀️ https://t.co/DdLJmRd2ZG
