The Drop: Andrew McMahon & John Mayer
Your guide to New Music Friday featuring Andrew McMahon and John Mayer.

After dabbling in Americana on 2013’s Paradise Valley and obsessing over a breakup on 2017’s The Search For Everything (Katy Perry’s impact), it looks like John Mayer is returning to his breezy pop/rock roots on album number eight. The lead single, “New Light,” dropped a couple of weeks ago and it’s the singer/songwriter’s catchiest bop in a decade. Co-produced with No I.D., the track finds our down-on-his-luck hero desperately trying to break out of the fried zone. It’s about wanting to be viewed as you see yourself.

That narrative comes through perfectly in the soon-to-go-viral video. John rocks questionable fashion (that hoodie has been at the bottom of someone’s closet since the ’90s) as he does his best to impress against a series of hilariously bad green screens. If Tommy Wiseau directed a music video, it would look a little something like this. “New Light” is proof that John still has a couple of tricks up his sleeve. In music as in life, sometimes you get further when you stop trying so hard. Watch him in action up top.
