New Find: Laura Jean's 'Touchstone'
Laura Jean dabbles in synth-pop on 'Touchstone' and gets Lorde's seal of approval.

Tierra Whack caught everyone’s attention with 2017’s “Mumbo Jumbo” video, which offered the world’s first marriage of rap and dental surgery. It’s positively mundane, however, next to “Whack World.” The rising singer/rapper, who has been touted as One To Watch by Lil Yachty, Solange and BROCKHAMPTON, delivers 15 one-minute vignettes featuring different songs. The music is staggeringly eclectic, effortlessly bouncing from hip-hop bops to pop-adjacent anthems, and the visuals are mind-blowing.

It’s hard to pick a favorite. All of the mini-clips, which were directed by Thibaut Duverneix, are striking, but the nail-art lyric video that kicks off “Whack World” is unlike anything I’ve ever seen and the pet cemetery-based visual for a song I assume is called “All Dogs Go To Heaven” (I really need to hear the full version) is simultaneously moving and funny. Oh, and then there’s the ’80s workout-themed vignette that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Get acquainted with Tierra Whack above and below.
