Hayley Kiyoko Talks 'Expectations': Interview
We speak to Hayley about her killer debut LP and being an out pop star.

One of the many highlights of Hayley Kiyoko’s Expectations LP, which easily ranks as one of the year’s best pop offerings, is her collaboration with Kehlani. Their signature sounds combine effortlessly on “What I Need” and that synergy is also reflected in the music video, which Hayley directed herself. Filmed in Ojai, California, the clip finds the alt-R&B queen struggling to relate to her aunt. She decides to run away with her childhood best friend (the “Curious” hitmaker) and their relationship develops into something deeper.

After witnessing the “Girls” debacle, which both women spoke out about, it’s refreshing to see queer love approached with empathy, understanding and respect. “Just so u know…. this my favorite video i’ve ever been apart of,” Kehlani tweeted of her experience. “Hayley is a genius, an incredible actress and one of the most diligent and hard working directors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.” Watch the video, which is sure to go viral, above and revisit the slinky “Curious” below. It offers a different perspective on the LGBTQ+ experience altogether.
